Tips for People with Tooth Sensitivity

Tips for People with Tooth SensitivityTooth sensitivity can really affect the well-being of those who suffer from it. Teeth usually become sensitive because the dentin becomes exposed. Dentin is the layer beneath your enamel, and it gets exposed when the enamel is worn away. Dentin can also be exposed from receding gums. There are a few different tips you can follow in order to try and deal with your tooth sensitivity.

Dentin contains microscopic tubules that lead directly to the nerve center of the tooth, the pulp. When a hot or cold liquid is consumed by an individual who has a lot of exposed dentin, the sensation travels straight to the nerve. These tubules are what toothpastes that are made for sensitive teeth try to target. These toothpastes try to build up the lost enamel and block the easy access to the tubules. There are several different brands of toothpaste made for people with sensitive teeth. Avoid whitening toothpastes, though, as they can be abrasive and can contribute to enamel loss. Also be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, as brushes with harder bristles can also lead to enamel loss. Fluoride treatments administered by your dentist can also be extremely helpful in returning strength back to your teeth.

Monitoring your diet is also an important step in preventing tooth sensitivity. It is especially wise to avoid highly acidic foods like lemons, as these foods are notorious for wearing down enamel. Be sure to remember that decay can also cause tooth sensitivity. That is why it is important to avoid eating foods high in sugar, as the bacteria in plaque feed off of this sugar and secrete harmful acids. Keep in mind that starch is also broken down into sugar by our bodies. If you eat any of these foods, be sure to brush and floss afterwards.
